Raveena Tandon:
In the annals of Bollywood history, certain moments stand out as intriguing what-ifs, and one such chapter involves Raveena Tandon and the iconic film “Kuch Kuch Hota Hai.”
In a recent revelation, Raveena Tandon shared insights into why she declined the role of Tina in the movie, and how it continues to be a topic of discussion between her and director Karan Johar.
Karan Johar, making his directorial debut with “Kuch Kuch Hota Hai,” faced a daunting task when it came to casting the pivotal character of Tina.
Interestingly, Raveena Tandon, a prominent actress of that era, was among Karan’s initial choices for the role. However, Raveena made a firm decision to decline the offer, creating a ripple effect that is discussed even today.
In a candid interview with HT, Raveena Tandon shed light on the aftermath of her decision and how Karan Johar hasn’t quite forgiven her for it. She revealed, “Till date, Karan (Johar) holds me accountable for not doing Kuch Kuch Hota Hai (Rani Mukerji’s part). I was like, ‘Yar tu mujhse aur kuchh bhi kara le.’”
This statement reflects the easy camaraderie between Raveena and Karan, where a friendly banter has persisted over the years regarding this missed opportunity.
Raveena’s refusal to take on Tina’s character wasn’t an isolated incident in the film’s casting journey. Twinkle Khanna, affectionately known as Tina by industry insiders, was Karan’s initial choice due to the character sharing her real name. However, Twinkle too had reservations about the role, leading to the eventual casting of Rani Mukerji.
In the same interview, Raveena Tandon delved deeper into the circumstances surrounding her decision. “Karan still doesn’t forgive me for not doing Kuch Kuch Hota Hai. But he didn’t understand at that time,” she stated.
The complexity of the situation arose from Raveena’s professional standing at that juncture. Both Raveena and Kajol, who eventually essayed the role, were contemporaries, having started their careers together and often featuring in lead roles.
Reflecting on the dynamics of the industry during that era, Raveena explained, “Kajol was my contemporary. We started together, we were both doing lead roles. So, I couldn’t have done a Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, where I was at a lower… where I probably had a smaller role like Rani.”
This insight into the competitive landscape of Bollywood in the late ’90s provides context to Raveena’s decision-making process, emphasizing the importance of career trajectories and roles in shaping an actor’s journey.
While the incident created a humorous exchange between Raveena and Karan, it also sheds light on the unpredictability of showbiz.
Years later, Karan’s instincts proved right, and “Kuch Kuch Hota Hai” became a cult film, etching its place in the hearts of ’90s kids. Despite Raveena’s absence from the film, her contribution to Bollywood continued to flourish through diverse roles and performances.
Interestingly, Raveena Tandon also mentioned another missed opportunity with Karan Johar. “In fact, there was a Dharma film Varun Sood and I were supposed to do together, but unfortunately, it didn’t happen,” she revealed. The mention of this untold tale adds another layer to the narrative, showcasing the intricacies of collaborations and the twists of fate within the film industry.
As the reminiscences of “Kuch Kuch Hota Hai” continue to reverberate, Raveena Tandon’s decision not to take on the role of Tina becomes a fascinating footnote in Bollywood history.
The camaraderie between Raveena and Karan, marked by friendly banter, exemplifies the camaraderie that persists beyond the lights and cameras. The untold tales and ‘what-ifs’ in the realm of film casting serve as reminders that the magic of cinema often lies in the unexpected choices that shape its destiny.
