Reason for Mathew Perry’s Death

According to news accounts, ketamine—a substance used in anaesthesia and some antidepressants—had an “intense impact” on Friends star Matthew Perry’s death. Individuals who use it recreationally often refer to it as a psychedelic party drug.

According to reports, Mathew Perry had been undergoing ketamine infusion therapy for depression every other day for some time, but recently reduced its use, with his last known infusion taking place about two and a half weeks before his death.

According to reports, the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner concluded that “cardiac overstimulation and respiratory depression” were probably the result of elevated ketamine levels. Given that Perry had both diabetes and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, there was a chance that the medication would exacerbate his breathing problems and airway blockage.

“This is a schedule X drug in India, meaning it is tightly controlled and monitored by doctors on a case-specific basis. Medically supervised, it is safe. The risk only comes with unsupervised use,” said Dr Shaunak Ajinkya, a mental health specialist affiliated with Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital in Mumbai.

What is Ketamine?

Discovered by American chemist Calvin L. Stevens in 1962, ketamine was initially used in the late 1960s as a dissociative anaesthetic in humans and animals and later during the Vietnam War for surgery.

It is derived from the hallucinogenic drug phencyclidine (PCP) and functions by increasing the activity of the neurotransmitter glutamate by inhibiting the NMDA receptor in the brain and spinal cord.

Put simply, it increases reward pathways in the brain and blocks the transmission of pain in the spine. Ketamine was first used to treat pain, but in the last ten years, research into its euphoric effects has led to its exploration as a potentially effective new treatment for severe depression, one that could help people escape their sadness.

The “dissociative” impact of the medication produces a form of extreme high where the user experiences changed reality. As it is a clear liquid and can even be easily dissolved into a white powder, it became associated with date rape drugs. It can now be purchased as a nasal spray as well.

Because it is a sedative, it can make breathing difficult, leading to respiratory depression and even sudden cardiac arrest if arteries become narrowed. It has an impact on blood pressure and heart rate, but if your blood vessels are damaged, your heart cannot keep up the pace, which can result in sudden cardiac arrest. It is harmful to the liver and bladder. Irregular high doses can cause schizophrenia-like symptoms and create dependence on the drug. When ketamine is mixed with alcohol, the risk of death increases, which likely happened in Perry’s case.
